The Matter of 'If' — Hope.
series

About The Series

We step into this universe, into an interconnected space where imagination and hope can connect us across time and space. Yet, on a deeper level, there exists a profound connection to both our individual selves and the natural world. We are but manifestations of a singular element, water, which binds us harmoniously with all life on this planet. And in this state of connection, hope ceases to be merely a dream, but a tangible reality.

"The 'Matter of 'If’—Hope' is an ongoing series of works, comprising site-specific installations and sculptures that delve deep into the complexities of hope dichotomies and human perception. It seeks to not only challenge boundaries through its creation but also through its representation, dismantling barriers to foster a natural connection with viewers amidst nature or the portrayal of natural elements.

To date, the 'Hope’ Installation series has engaged audiences during solo-day displays on three distinct beaches in the UAE. Each installation consists of numerous stones, meticulously handwritten and glazed with the word 'hope,' adding layers to the narrative through both social and individual lenses in every scene. Moreover, under optimal conditions, the embedded 'hopes' emit a subtle glow from within the darkness, symbolising the intricate relationship between hope and darkness, and questioning its enduring presence. The 'Hope' series employs metaphorical approaches to convey the interconnectedness of all life through the element of water.

Mozhdeh's artistic journey is deeply rooted in her exploration of 'the inside' and its myriad manifestations through visual expression. Her work primarily centres on the human experience, delving into personal and collective perceptions. Throughout her creative process, she intricately weaves emotional connections between materials and conceptual visions, drawing from her childhood experiences fueled by curiosity and reflection on life's complexities.

"I was born into an Iranian family during the chaos and terror of war. My childhood was forged amidst the alternating red and white alerts of bombardment, a constant oscillation between fear and relief — my life unfolding in the liminal spaces in-between. From this perspective, my art emerges from reflections on these gaps, not as absences or negative, but as active presences shaping our perceptions and interactions with the world. 'The Matter of ‘If’—Hope' delves into these reflections on ‘hope’ in these gaps — the space between now and the future, between 'people' and 'hope,' and among 'people' themselves by pattering and tracing everything in nature."

Public Art Site-specific Installation

 -2024

The "Hope Installation" is an ongoing public art site-specific installation project that delves deep into the subjects of hope dichotomies and conventions in human perception, and aims to push the boundaries not only through the formation of art but also through its representation. The Hope Installation series dismisses the walls between people and art by bringing art directly to the people, rather than relying solely on gallery spaces for its viewing.

The piece is made of numerous stones, handwritten and glazed with the word 'hope,' which, when installed in every scene, nature, or man-made site, adds a new dimension to the dialogue of the work itself and the viewer through both social and individual lenses.

The Darker - The Brighter

A long time ago, someone I loved gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this was a gift. It took me years to learn that dark is the core of life. And when I discovered that, something grew inside me. Something glows. Something that some call 'hope', I call 'choice'.

The installation, 'The Darker, The Brighter', is an immersive installation that incorporates elements of the body, sound, video, and luminescent objects within darkness. It is born from a blend of life experiences and an exploration of the philosophical and scientific aspects of darkness, delving into the shifting relationship between life, hope, and the future. Psychobiological studies of darkness reveal its profound impact on our bodies and minds, acting as a mirror to our inner selves. In the darkness, we perceive things that remain hidden in the light. The installation aims to create a transition, akin to a portal, guiding viewers from light to darkness. Initially, it challenges their perception by altering their sight. Subsequently, it introduces a series of sensory experiences, including the use of Beta wave sounds (13-40 Hz), known for enhancing focus and concentration, along with video motion depicting word waves and the symbolism of hope in the form of a radiant pillar. These carefully orchestrated elements seek to engage the human senses, inviting viewers to explore the depths of themselves and beyond, narrating a story of hope within the darkness.
